To the Editor:
Over the last couple of weeks, I have probably read at least 8 editorials from Democrats running for Governor, NH Senate and NH House which all lead the reader to believe there is a ban on abortion in NH. This is far from the truth. To Quote Rep Burroughs: “They (Republican Extremists) have also failed to recognize that abortion rights cannot be separated from women’s healthcare, which may include severe underlying or untreated health conditions, including asthma, diabetes, hypertension and hyperthyroidism during pregnancy. There are also situations involving fetal anomalies and high-risk pregnancies, which are impacted when abortion bans are in play.” I believe it is important for everyone to understand what the law is on abortions in NH. There is no abortion ban! If you want to say abortion is banned in months 7,8, and 9 except for emergencies I can live with that explanation, but it does not suit their narrative. They would rather portray Republicans as uncaring people who ban abortions.
Check out RSA 329:44 to see exactly how the abortion law is written. Basically, any women can have an abortion up to 24 weeks or six months of pregnancy, no questions asked. In the later months if fetal anomalies occur or a medical emergency occurs an abortion can be performed beyond the 6-month period. These emergencies include to preserve the life of the pregnant woman whose life is endangered by a physical disorder, physical illness or physical injury, including life -endangering physical condition caused by or arising from the pregnancy itself, or when continuation of the pregnancy will create a serious risk of substantial and irreversible impairment of major bodily functions. The women and her doctor can decide on an abortion with no consequences. There is not an abortion BAN in New Hampshire. Ask those running for office to clarify their position.
